(Core Competency #2: Strategic Management) This session will explore all the elements that make up an institution’s current security landscape. These include the current climate of shifting threats as well as the evolving mitigation techniques that feed into negligent security as a liability claim and security as a market force. We will explain the current threat landscape, from global terrorism threats and their domestic implications to more common violent crime trends. We will then explain how those trends feed into shifting concepts of “foreseeable threats” and “reasonable security measures” with respect to a premises liability / negligent security case. We will delve deeper into student and parent expectations, plus best practices by institutions.

As a result of participating in this session, attendees:

+ Better understand the current terrorism and mass casualty landscape
+ Better understand what makes up a negligent security liability case and the rising bar defendants must meet to defeat a negligent security claim
+ Take away strategies to proactively prepare to defend potential cases as well as strategies for mitigating the chance of, or at least damage from, acts of violence on campus
